When it comes to scarecrows, you have the opportunity to be wildly creative. You can even weatherproof your scarecrow or dress up as a scarecrow yourself!
Last year, I reviewed a scarecrow book called Creative Scarecrows: 35 Fun Figures for Your Yard & Garden. I still highly recommend it for inspiration. After all, you may have never thought of using a stovepipe hat or flowerpot head and boobs.
If you’ve always wanted to create a yard person, but dislike the traditional scarecrow look, search for Creative Scarecrows in your library or break down and buy it. It’s certainly a nice coffee table book.
Whether you’re entering a scarecrow festival or just decorating your porch, now’s the time to gather up materials for your scarecrow. Don’t forget that scarecrows are equal opportunity. Save old dresses for female scarecrows.
Useful scarecrow items you may want to hang onto or hit the thrift shop for include:
- worn pants and shirts
- dresses
- glasses
- wood for signs
- newspapers or straw
- wigs and hats
- pantyhose
- tree leaves
- chair for a sitting scarecrow
- burlap
- gloves
- twine
- flowerpots
- stovepipe
- shoes
- broomsticks
- garden stakes
Of course, you may not need all those items. It’s best to formulate your plan before gathering materials. For basic instructions on making a scarecrow, visit Life123.
