Male midwives in history

December 6, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

Did you know there used to be male midwives? I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. Personally, I don’t have a problem with a male obstetrician/gynecologist, but somehow, the idea of a male midwife strikes me as odd.

Anyway, over at Wonders & Marvels, that great blog about the history of medicine, they have a fun-reading post on how male midwives became popular for a while, but then lost that popularity just about as quickly as they found it: Men and Women in Midwifery.
