Marriage & Taxes – Helping the Family

So here’s something I didn’t plan on before getting married: helping out my in-laws at tax time. This morning on worked on my mother-in-law’s taxes… after having looked at my uncle-in-laws taxes a week or two ago… after having been “available for questions” with my sister-in-laws taxes a week or two before that. (I’ve already mentioned that ours have been done for a LONG time.)
Don’t take this as a complaint, because it isn’t. I actually enjoy the process… to a degree anyway. A couple years ago i told my sister-in-law she would have to start doing her own, not because I was unwilling, but because hers were getting pretty complicated and I was no longer confident in putting myself behind her return. (Musicians! Sheesh!
)
It just isn’t something I was expecting.
What about you? Is one of you the “tax professional” of the household? And has he or she turned into the tax professional of the extended family as well?

Our taxes go beyond complicated– paying in multiple countries– so we employ an accountant in each country we need to file. It is expensive, but making a mistake would be beyond a hassle. I generally organize our documents for each country, but this past year, being in a different country than my husband, has forced him to take on some responsibility.
Maria,
I drew the line at multiple states… No way I’d tackle multiple countries!
