Married Couple Has Dressed Alike For Five Years

Last night, I found this story - Dressing alike everyday habit for this couple

Retired couple, Honey and Ray Smith have dressed alike every day for the past 5 years.   Their closet is full of matching size small and size medium shirts, pajamas, watches, two sizes of matching croc shoes (yuck) in various colors, as well as matching pants. Honey does skip the boxer shorts – apparently she enjoys Victoria’s Secret under her matching Hawaiian shirts.

Together since high school – when they first sported matching outfits for Senior Ditch Day – the couple wears the matching outfits to show the world that they are a happy couple.

“I don’t even think about it anymore,” said Honey. “I just went in one day and bought some shirts for him and some shirts for me.”

The couple had often matched their clothing colors in the past. But after Ray retired in 2003, they decided to match everything.

“The reason is we wanted to let people know we’re happy,” said Ray. “Also, people remember us because we dress alike.”

This is a cute story, they sound still very much in love after 46 years of marriage. They take monthly trips to Disneyland and shop together at the mall. These two enjoy together-time.

I haven’t dressed like Steve since we were dating in high school and got matching t-shirts at Great America and I don’t intend to start now (he wouldn’t look good in a skirt), but I do like to do things that are couple-y… Okay, well I like to hold hands when we go places and to me, this is another version of that. Their matching outfits are like a visual bonding, the clothing version of a hand-hold, a connection.  Does that make sense?  They are showing the world that they are a team.

What do you think? Do you know a couple like this?  Is there truth in the theory that people grow to look alike as they age?

  1. Sounds a lot like what Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes do. I am always seeing them dress alike, kind of scary since she chopped her hair. But after reading this it makes more sense.

  2. Yikes, I had not thought about the hair, but now I see what you mean.

  3. My husband and I have a few matching t-shirts, but only because we attended the same events together. If we accidentally dress alike, he’ll go and change his shirt. Dressing alike is a bit corny, but if these two are still in love and are happy doing it then it seems sweet.

My grandmother used to make all of the clothes for her and my grandfather…and they matched ALL of the time! We would call them our twinsy grandparents. My husband and I don’t dress completely matching, but we will often times wear the same color shirt…except when I wear pink…he just won’t go there (dang). We are a pretty mushy couple and I think that coordinating outfits does show the world that we’re connected…maybe a little more than other married folks. Or just nuttier. :)

  5. Leah, you and your husband look very connected. You have like a light that connects you or something. I know it sounds silly, but Bay and I were talking about it last night.

Karen, it is corny and cute. :D

  6. Greg says:

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of meeting this couple yesterday, at a “Downtown Disney” restaurant. Amazing people.. probably some of the nicest that I have crossed paths with.

  7. Greg, I’m glad to hear that they really are nice people. They sounded great in the article – very positive and happy.

I remember reading that they are big Disney fans. :D

    Thanks for commenting.

  8. Heather says:

Ray & Honey are now my grandparents after marrying their grandson. This is them, so in love. I can only hope that my husband and I can be like this in our retirement. Over 40 years of marriage, you don’t see that these days. If you frequent Disneyland or California Adventures and see them, stop and say hi!

    • Thanks for commenting, Heather. I wish you and your husband a long and happy life together. Do your new grandparents advise dressing alike? I really enjoyed their story.
