The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

If you like smaller, more personable zoos, you’ll enjoy The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. When I visited a few years ago, there was a volunteer or keeper at nearly every corner to answer questions or give a talk. The exhibits aren’t large in most cases, but they are well maintained.

My favorite exhibit was the chimpanzees with a large indoor viewing area. Yet, it’s the ravens that are getting quite a bit of attention these days. The zoo just added two new ravens to their community — Rise and Conquer, the live mascots of the Baltimore Ravens. Other birds that call The Maryland Zoo home include the African penguin, common barn owl, little blue heron, black vulture and more.
The zoo also houses a polar bear exhibit and the beautiful arctic fox, as well as other mammals. I’ve read some reviews online where people complain that there aren’t enough animals and the prices are too high. You certainly won’t see as many animals as larger zoos, but I always find it nice to support smaller AZA-accredited zoos. And, since parking is free, the admission isn’t that bad. For adults, you’ll pay $15 at the gate on weekends or $13 during the week, but you can buy online ahead of time and save a few dollars.
