Memorial Day Weekend Safety Tips

It’s Memorial Day weekend. I really enjoy picnics by the freshly opened pool and seeing all the kids laugh and play together. The parades and professional fireworks are fun, too. However, there are some very dangerous things that go on over the weekend, like the fireworks and gun shots some people think they should have going off in their back yards.

Stay safe over the holiday by:
- Obeying local fireworks ordinances. If someone is injured while you set off illegal fireworks in the yard, you could end up in big trouble.
- Making sure all fireworks are set off properly and that you have a fire extinguisher and a water source nearby just in case something goes wrong.
- Keeping pets and children indoors if someone nearby is shooting fireworks off. We ended up with a bunch of spent fireworks in our yard one year when I was a little girl and my baby brother tried to grab one that was a dud and was still smoldering after it made a short trip over the neighbor’s fence.
- Putting a flotation device on all children if you are having a party near a pool.
- Packing up food that could spoil and refrigerating it immediately after the meal is over.
