Memory Tips
Though memory has been shown to decline with age, there’s a lot of research out there that suggests regular “mental exercise” can stave off some of this loss.
Additionally, you can develop techniques to help yourself keep track of important things.
Online Education Database has some great tips to improve memory.
There are 75 helpful things that, according to the article, can help you go from “Amnesic to Elephantic”. Though it’s related to studying and education, the tips emphasize specific memory techniques anyone can use as well as sound advice such as reduce stress, retain a positive attitude, and, exercise regularly.
Do you find your own memory decreases with age (not that I’m calling you “old”, we’re all getting older every day)? Are your kids robbing you of brain cells?
Share your favorite tip to help you remember what need remembering.

I think my kids have officially robbed me of any memory I might have had because these days I cannot remember squat!
I am off to go check out the website!
Well, my mind is like a steel colander so I make LISTS and MORE LISTS to keep track of everything. Now if I could just keep track of my lists . . .
Well i should have waited after I had read the article before commenting – the first thing that really stood out to me was the phrase Chronic Stress – I think my Dad suffers from that and he has become an even bigger worry wart since Mom passed away and his memory seems to have gone by the wayside not that I have much room to talk in this area either….
Oh…so all this school stuff is going to keep me from getting OldTimers Disease??? Whoa.
I have always been sort of scatterbrained, but since I had my son…Woah….Look Out! I am a FIRM listmaker. That’s what keeps me most organized these days!
Working in the medical field I’ve always found that my memory was pretty decent. However, pregnancy and now motherhood have really taken their toll. I find that in order to stay organized and remember the things I need to get done I need to make lists and keep an online calendar.
Memory… what? Where am I? Who are you people? I’m pulled in a million directions at once every day. The DS (9 months old), DD (11 yrs old), DH (31 going on 4), psych rotation in nursing school, exams once a week, my mom, my MIL, my sister-in-law, my sister. I need all the help I can get. I’m off to the article……as soon as I stop DS from eating the dogs food!!!!!!!!!!!
In my “old” age, I find that I am getting very CRAFT-y (Can’t Remember A F___ing Thing), and I also find myself seeking the meaning of the hereafter … as in, when I wander into the kitchen, I can’t remember what I came in hereafter. Ba da dump
I do need some memory techniques … whether from stress-overload, aging or dis-use, I have found that my brain ain’t what she used to be. This became very apparent when I start back to school last year and simple study techniques just ain’t gettin’ it.
Being a semi-stay-home mom with two kids, and a full plate and lots of stress makes my memory at least as bad as my dad (age 59 with very early AD) most days. He often remembers things I don’t! If I had time to worry about one more thing, I’d probably be freaked out by that! List-making and keeping a calendar (on the wall and in my purse) help to keep me on track.
Comment. Woo Hoo!
No, okay, my favorite tip is to remember the number of things I need to remember. If I know I have to remember 4 things, and I’ve only done 3, at least I know I’m forgetting something and can stop and think about it.
they say your brain literally shrinks during pregnancy…I don’t think mine ever grew back!
I try to use triggers to help me remember things. Like I will do this after I do that, that triggers my memory that I have to do this. Not sure if that only makes sense to me.
Hmm what was that about. When I meet someone I say their name over and over in my head or I will just forget.
I find I have the hardest time remembering peoples names.
One trick I did in high school to remember the periodic table was to make up a little poem with each word beginning with one of the elements.
My biggest problem, besides people’s names, has always been remembering when something is supposed to happen. “I know we’ve got library books due. Oh, they were due LAST WEEK?” Breaking down and buying a desk calendar to jot things down on has been my biggest help. (I’m sure lots of people already do that, but it’s honestly the only thing I do.)
Those tips look great. A lot of them I’ve seen before, but some of them are new to me. The one I need to work on the most is staying in the moment – my mind is always wandering off.
Great tips, Lord knows I need to start using some of them
I have a terrible memory, think it is a problem with my thyroid. I make lots of lists!
Being the poster child for Adult ADD, I don’t know if I have memory loss, or… oh look something shiny!
Things that I memorize, I retain, but it is the short term stuff that I “lose” frequently. (What did I come here to get? Leave room… oh yeah… return to room… “Damn, forgot again”
Thank you for the chance to win some prizes.
I try to do the list thing. But I only remember to actually add to the list when I’ve completed a task. Not sure that’s the way those things are supposed to work.
honestly I think my memory gets smaller every time I have a child.
