According to a new study, people with serious mental illness understand less about diabetes. They also have higher rates of type 2 diabetes than mentally healthy people. The study was undertaken by researchers with the Sheppard Pratt Health system and University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. An encouraging news is that the diabetes knowledge among these individuals can be increased if they are given specific instructions about the disease. The results of the study appear in the September issue of Psychosomatics.
