Microwaves and small children – not a good match up

October 7, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

As parents, when we’re cooking, we usually warn our children about the dangers of the hot stoves and the hot contents in the pots and pans. We don’t, however, often take the same precautions with the microwave. As a result, young children are being burned, sometimes severely, because of hot containers or their very hot contents.

According to a recent study, hot foods and liquids removed from microwave ovens were the fourth leading cause of scalding burn injuries in children who were under 5 years old. Scalding pains are terribly painful and can leave scars. If the burns are over a large enough area, they can cause serious damage, affecting the child for the rest of his or her life.

You can read more about the study in this article: Microwaves pose burn injury risk to small children

  1. There are other reasons to be wary of microwaves. We got rid of ours four years ago, after reading studies about the harmful effects of microwave heating to the nutritional content in food, and we’ve never missed it. People also often microwave plastic, which emits harmful chemicals and makes the food or liquid you are heating up toxic. Bleech. Thanks for this post.
