Migraine and post-traumatic stress disorder

Are migraines and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related? According to a new study published in the journal Headache, there may be.

Researchers evaluated 32 patients who had episodic migraines and 29 who had chronic migraines. The patients were all evaluated for symptoms of PTSD. The researchers found that 54% of those with chronic migraines (migraines for 15 days more more per month) had PTSD while only 22% of those with episodic migraines did.

The researchers believe that PTSD is a risk factor for chronic migraines and patients who experience such migraines may benefit from PTSD treatment as well as migraine treatment.
