Mixing It Up

I’ve been injured, so I’m trying to take it easy, but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up on my workout routine. I hit the ocean today (since I live right there) to work on burning some calories and getting outside. It went well, except for the whole making myself seasick thing, which I had no idea was even possible until today. . . if you’re like me and you’re going to be swimming laps this winter, here are some tips for you to make the most of your workout:

1. Try a challenging stroke like the butterfly. I recommend working up to this one, but if it is slightly unfamiliar, you’ll burn more calories when the stroke’s not as easy.

2. Mix it up with interval training. Like with all effective exercise routines, it’s good to round out your exercise with weight-bearing activities and “breathers” for your bod that also burn calories.

3. Slip on some ankle weights if you work out in a pool. I like the Altus Athletic Batwing weights.

4. Combine your workout with stretching. Grab a little sun or fake bake and then hit your yoga mat to elongate those muscles. This is a good first-time guide.

Do you swim to exercise?
