Mom’s Depression & Baby’s Sleep

Babies born to mothers with depression are more likely to suffer from sleep disturbances after birth from 2 weeks old until 6 months of age.
The findings come from a new study by researchers at the University of Michigan Depression Center. The study is published in the May issue of the journal SLEEP.

Researchers also believe that these findings are important because sleep disturbances in infancy may result in increased risk for developing early-onset depression in childhood. Plus, mothers already suffering from depression may not be as equipped to handle babies who don’t sleep well!
The lead author of the study, Roseanne Armitage, PhD, believes that the damage may be reversible with proper intervention for high-risk infants. Find out more about this study at Science Daily.
