Mothers Confess: Why I Hate Myself

On a recent episode of Oprah, according to Dr. Robin Smith, there are many signs that you may be suffering from a lack of love for yourself. Eating or drinking too much, abusing drugs, overspending, working too hard or even gossiping could all be signs of a lack of self-love.

I don’t think many women stop to realize that sometimes some of their “over doing it” can be an attempt to mask the problem. The problem stemming from a lack of self esteem and a feeling of unimportance in their lives. Whether real or imagined, this can be a problem.

It’s no wonder women suffer from depression more often than men. Let’s think about all the suits a mother wears – it’s not the job for just anyone.

According to Dr. Robin, it’s important for people close to those suffering to not take the “going down with the ship” approach, but to do something that intervenes with the behavior rather then enabling.

  1. This is a topic that it very close to my heart. I struggled with my own shortcomings and feelings of incompetence on a daily basis.
So what helped me snap out of it? I really wish I could disclose my method of healing, as it greatly relates to this website, but am unable to as of yet. I would love to explore this topic more, a little later in the future. It is one that needs to be more widely discussed, as it affects many mothers.

  2. Gayla McCord says:

Kadi – I’m one of those mom’s who dives head first into her work. I could work from before dawn to after midnight so much easier than I can deal with the turmoil in my life.

I do realize though, it’s nothing but one big bandaid that prolongs the inevitable.
