Mouse’s Fourth Halloween

Okay, clearly author Lauren Thompson’s book hasn’t been reinvented for the fourth year. But the little book that could, one of the first in her popular mouse series, is also a favorite in my family. And with children ages one, three and five, you can bet I’ve read it more than once.

This charming book remains tops in my house for two reasons: it is simple and it is beautiful.

The text is quite simple which makes it easy to read along with children. Even those children who are not yet reading can identify the key elements of the story (the jack o’ lanterns, cats and more). Each reading brings squeals of recognition, which is always a plus for the parents (Remember, when choosing a children’s book, it really is all about the parents, right?)

But what really makes the book stand out among the other Halloween fare are the illustrations: the soft style of illustrator Buket Erdogan (who also illustrated Mouse’s First Christmas) offers just the right balance of spooky for the kid set and beautiful.

In our house, Mouse’s First Halloween is a classic.  And right about this time of year, we’re digging it out again…
