Move Over, Cupcake

Will Cupcakes Be the Next Krispy Kreme? asks the New York Times last week in reference to the “cupcake craze” that has been endemic in the New York City for the past decade plus.
Charlie, who’s not exactly anymore on the gluten-free casein-free diet (without dire results), used to make a beeline for cupcakes. Years of being told “no, you can’t have that” led to him being something like obsessed with bakery display cases and to running a finger through technicolor birthday cake frosting whenever we looked the other way. Now that we’ve started saying “sure, you can get whatever you want,” he seems to have become more picky in his food choices and cupcakes have been left in the dust for brownies.
See what a little choice can do.

Yep, brownies are better.
I live in the Midwest and do you know what I miss? Dunkin’ Donuts with the chocolate icing filling.
“no, you can’t have that”
.
At home we call this, “Forbidden fruit syndrome”
The gourmet cupcake fad hasn’t seemed to have hit our boutique bakeries yet, but then Krispy Kremes didn’t make much of a splash round here until it was already passe in most other places. We may start seeing this about the time it dies out back East and the smart set have moved on to pie or cobbler or something else.
(I tried a KK in Chicago once and it made my teeth hurt from the sweet–but at least I could say that I tried one.)
Brownies with chocolate chips are better anyway.
But, cupcakes with chocolate frosting are nice too. Not techno-coloured, but chocolate.
Yes, forbidden fruit syndrome has been a side-effect of being GFCF that I had not anticipated. Giving Charlie the choice of the desired items has made a big difference.
Had my first KK in Nashville; seeing them at Penn Station has made the whole phenom well, less phenomenal. Mrs. C, there are Dunkin’ Donuts everywhere I turn around here in NJ—-one right down the block, actually!
It’s the frosting that seems to be very popular around here and also the crumbs on crumb cake……
Yes, there’s a brownie in Charlie’s lunch tomorrow.
Charlie has good taste!
My son likes both, but he always chooses cupcakes because they’re so visually appealing (I think). Usually by the time he’s finished with the icing he’s too full to eat the cake. I’m totally different, I never liked icing even when I was a kid. Usually I go for the cake and don’t eat the frosting.
Good for Charlie for there is nothing better then a brownie with icing, I just hope he can have the ones the nuts in then witch makes them even better.
I had my first KK last year at a LAUSD meeting. Growing up in NJ and working at DD during high school and than a year after HS I got tired of donuts and cinnamon buns and hot cocoa, cannot handle donuts still.
Now I could really use a porkroll sandwich and stewarts root beer and the marshmallow fudge from jersey boardwalk. Oh and also a fresh white castle burger with onions and picke.
There was this place in Union where across the street from WC was a drive up or drive thru hot dog place, loved them.
Hmmm, will have to figure out how to send you some of those boardwalk eats……… Really, there are at least two Dunkin Donuts in our town and somehow we managed to live within walking distance of both!
