Movies Count for Reading Logs?

Earlier this morning our son brought us his reading log for last month, on it we saw a few movies we have here at home that have subtitles. Subtitles? Movies? When did movies count for what your child read for the month before? We did sign off on the paper but questioned this. He insisted the teacher told the class as long as they have to read subtitles during the movie it counts.

We do NOT agree with this and did write the teacher asking about this. Would you okay this? Granted he does read he did not have all the books he read. I’m okay with him listening to a story on tape but I’m not okay with the whole watching a movie and getting credit. I’m a booklover myself and love reading so I would love for my children to become just as fascinated, however I will not cheat. So far we haven’t heard back from the teacher.

Would you sign off on your child watching a movie with subtitles as his reading for the month?

Of course not. I can’t even believe someone would think to count it. What’s next? Credit for a trip to the grocery store if they read the road signs?

Can you believe the teacher wrote back stating this is allowed and they encourage it? Yep apparently they are wanting them to read no matter what even if it means during a show. Ugh, I remember the days when only books counted and that did NOT include comic books. Yes, comics count now too.
