Musings on planting bulbs

A few weeks ago, Mike and I wore ourselves out planting dozens and dozens (hundreds?) of bulbs around our house. You see, several years ago the spring flowers were beautiful, but after one particularly bad winter when it was extremely cold, but there was no snow…well, many of the bulbs just didn’t make it. I was devastated.
But unfortunately, I forgot to plant more bulbs last fall, so once more this spring there was a pitiful display. I had a pity-party, but then determined to do better this fall.
Planting bulbs is a lot like going on your regular artist dates and (for me) engaging in daily prayer and Bible reading. It can be hard work. There is not necessarily any immediate reward (unless you happen to like blisters and a sore back…but I digress). They are all activities that have delayed gratification, whether it’s a yard full of blooms in the spring, a replenished sense of well-being from a pleasant hike, or a deepening relationship with G-d.
I recommend all three!
