My favorite kids’ food resource

I love to cook (usually, though sometimes, like tonight, it’s beans and wieners and that’s it!) and I enjoy food tremendously. I’m not a food snob either. I’ll happily eat gourmet high end snooty-patootie food but I’m just as happy with a bowl of chili or a big slice of pizza. I’m generally pretty easy to please and the only thing I’m truly picky about is temperature. If it’s meant to be hot I don’t want it lukewarm, so all I can say is thank heaven for the microwave.

Anyway, with kids sometimes I find myself wanting to make meals a little fun. Although I have no problems with suppers, breakfast always seems to be the same rotation and lunches are frustrating because the middle of the day is one time I do NOT enjoy cooking.

My favorite place to pull inspiration is from Evelyn Raab. She’s a food columnist for Today’s Parent, a Canadian magazine and she writes the Cooking With Kids feature monthly. She’s the biggest reason I mourn the end of my subscription and I may just go ahead and order another year for her alone. She is hilarious. Her recipes also rock – they’re never overly complicated and they’ve almost always gone over well. You can check her out here if you too require some inspiration. She has ideas for breakfast, lunch, supper, dessert, snacks, lunch boxes, and special occasions.

We have to do a grocery run and get some more peanut butter and some bananas, but when we do, I think I’m going to give my oldest this “sandwich” for lunch as a fun spin on the usual PB and banana sandwich:

Slather the inside of a hot dog bun with peanut butter (sorry, it can’t be helped) and then lay a whole peeled banana inside. Honey, jam or jelly can be added if you wish. But it’s quite yummy without. Wrapped tightly in foil, this can even travel happily in a lunch box.

Simple and tasty but the different presentation and name is likely to be of interest to kids. I’m sure it would work equally well with peanut butter replacements for kids who have allergies.
