My Herbal View

This month the Lifestyles network is celebrating the view from our windows. I took this snapshot of my windowsill with some of my herbs in it before I transplanted them into the garden.
I love culinary herbs, so I have two types of rosemary, chocolate mint, cilantro, and basil pictured here just before they were transplanted to their summer homes.
I had chocolate mint in a small garden at the side of the house for several years. It actually threatened to take over the whole side of the house at one time. Mint is rather aggressive, and likes to drown out its neighbors. For some reason the chocolate mint stopped coming up last summer, and I really missed it. So this spring I’m replacing it, so next year I’ll be able to curse at it for growing where it’s not supposed to.
I love going out to pick a couple chocolate mint leaves to rub between my fingers, they’re also great in herbal teas, or for making minted sugar.
I grew some basil from seed, but it’s still tiny, and I want basil now! So I bought a larger plant to stick in the garden, until my little basil plants get large enough to start harvesting the leaves.
I can’t get through the summer without rosemary. It’s another plant I love to go out and pluck just to smell it’s wonderful scent. Rosemary has a citrus/ pine scent and flavor that’s wonderful in cookies, and on fish or chicken. Yum!
The cilantro will go in my favorite garden salsa. I have some cilantro seeds growing in the garden, but I got this one plant so I can start having cilantro in my salsa, and salads now.
If you’d like to see more views from my windows check them out at Mother Earth’s Garden. You can check out Sandy’s view at All Holiday Cafe.
