My Kid Can’t Get a Job – a Forum

August 6, 2007 by Elizabeth

write1.gifYou have a kid and a career, but, what if you have a kid who can’t get a career?

Pete Aldin of Freaked-Out Fathers is hosting a forum, “My Kid Can’t Get a Job“:

A sad reality in the Western World is that smarts and a good attitude won’t guarantee you a job. At the beginning of the 21st Century, thousands of young adults and older teenagers – who are talented, sharp and who work hard at getting employed – just can’t get a break.

Is your son or daughter one of them?

Soon I’ll be hosting a 60-minute conference call, a forum where you the parent can

* air your frustration and concerns,
* meet other parents struggling with the same challenges and
* hear some of the ideas that have made a difference in my professional work with jobseekers and young people.

Pete Aldin is a life coach, and, the forum takes place on August 22nd (Australian time), get more information at Freaked Out Fathers.

Oh, I thought YOU were hosting the conference call. I don’t have any kids older than 3.5, but the chance to talk to Busymom on the PHONE? Wow.

  2. Laura says:

This is an interesting post, because I had almost the exact opposite experience. My teenage daughter went out to look for work. She only applied at three places. She was offered jobs at two of those places. What we kept hearing over and over again is that it is hard for employers in our area to find reliable employees for low-end jobs.

  3. Gayla McCord says:

I’ve seen lots of parents with this same frustration. I can only imagine how it’s going to be when my 14-year-olds get old enough to work or find a career after college.

  4. Pete Aldin says:

Thanks Elizabeth for the mention! Laura that is so cool. And that happens a lot. It makes it all the more disappointing for the teens and young adults who can’t get that break.

But obviously your daughter is doing something right and there ARE jobs out there. Maybe some tips on your blog might help some folk who are wondering how to get their kid onto the career path.

Oh, dear, what a male! I’ve taken over your blog, Elizabeth! I’m a first time reader and I’ve just subscribed to your RSS. This looks really really good!

My son took a year off since graduating from High School last year. He will start college this fall. He has applied everywhere but could not get a summer job. Not even at a fast food place! I suppose it did not help that we moved way out to the country. He has been bored out of his mind this summer so he is reallly excited about starting school! Yeah!

  6. Laura says:

    Hi Peter and Elizabeth!

I did as Peter suggested and blogged about it on my WritingThoughts blog.

  7. Vytas says:

every kid with talent can get a job, sure they won’t get a good pay as an experts. Its possible to work on internet, if they are good at computer. One type of website where can work on intertent everyone with talent http://www.fivq.com/

  8. Paige says:

I am a kid who can’t get a job. And honestly, it is just as hard on my parents as it is me. I’m 19 and I have been looking for a job for almost 5 months now since my last job. I was involved in something of a scandal. A guy said he was giving like 30 people really good jobs with benefits, company cars, phones, the works. But it turned out that he was a complete liar. I quit my job half way through the ordeal because he told us all to, but I was going to anyway because I just wasn’t making enough to live off of. Well. I’ve been looking for a job for a while now, and it’s like everywhere is hiring, just not me. I get mad at my parents for telling me to hang in there. It’s hard. And I’m sorry for giving the attitude. And I’m sure your children are sorry too if they are giving you attitude. I’m sorry I’m not exactly your target audience, but I just wanted to say that I feel like a failure everyday, and if your child can’t find a job like I can’t I have a feeling that they are having the same feelings.

  9. Pete Aldin says:

Hey, Paige, apologies to Elizabeth for hijacking her blog here to talk to you but I just want to thank you for sharing those feelings. It’s often hard for us over 40s to remember what it was like to be 19, and especially to know what it’s like to be in your space.

You ain’t no failure, girl. I’ve been working with Jobseekers for years now and I’m going to recommend you hire Will Smith’s movie The Pursuit of Happyness. Watch it. Feel it. Learn from his pain and his triumph. There’s a scene about 1/2 through where he’s sleeping in a public bathroom. I was watching it with unemployed people today and they were saying that though they feel like their life’s in the toilet right now they’re realising they’re only partway through the movie. That’s you too… You go girl.

(Thanks for letting me blab on here, Elizabeth!)

  10. Carrington says:

I agree with you Paige, and I know EXACTLY how you feel, if not worse.

Take a look at what I had to go through.
(This entry is gonna be lengthy.)

My parents didn’t want me to get a job my sophomore year of high school (when I turned 16) because they feared it would “interfere with my school work”. I got my license the day I turned 16 als, but they had yet to get me a car (they didn’t want me to get one myself).
A year later (junior year, when I turn 17 [present age]), my parents finally get me a car (a year later), and they decide that they don’t want to pay for gas, so they fiiiinally allow me to look for a job, a couple months before summer. So I go out on my quest, even though I have no experience, and I’m not even 18. I apply to EVERY. SINGLE. PLACE. IN. MY. CITY. ONLINE. AND. IN. PERSON. I guarantee you there is not one single place in the entire Miami-Dade area that I have not atleast filled out an application for. And how many places do you think called me back for atleast an interview? NOT ONE SINGLE PLACE.

But then, I get a stroke of luck, and Kohl’s has a job fair with public group interviews, and I decide “This is my time to shine”. So I dress professionally (with a suit and tie, the whole 9), sudy the company and prepare to answer questions so I can be prepared to (finally) land this job. I go to the fair, get my interview done, get my hopes waaay up, take a drug test, and wait for them to call. But of course, it wasn’t that easy.

A friend of mine that went to the job fair a day after me called a couple days later telling me that he got the job (and they were gonna pay him well over minimum wage). So I told myself “It’s okay, maybe they just havent gotten to my name yet.” Days went by. Weeks went by. NO. CALL. I cried sometime after that, for the first time in 4 years. Things just aren’t what they used to be.

Just because we’re teenagers doesn’t mean that we know nothing about work and shouldn’t even be given a chance. Aren’t we people too? When you yell at us, do we not cringe? When you tell us a joke, do we not laugh? I really don’t understand why nobody will even think twice about me, or anybody else in my position.

    Hey everyone
I’m looking to whiten my teeth but not sure which whitening kit is the best and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

I tried the crest whitestrips and they didn’t keep my teeth white.. they started turning yellow after a week or two.

Sorry if its a bit off-topic but I really need some advice as I am attending my high school reunion next week and don’t want yellow teeth :)

    Thanks!

I wanted to share a new great affiliate marketing site I came across last week.

I’ve been using it ever since and I’ve been able to find great information on how to become a success in affiliate marketing. I’ve been able to buy several products with resell rights and turn them into my own, money making, Clickbank products that sell! I have also landed 3 major Joint Ventures with marketers in my niche, and I’ve done all this within 5 days!

  31. leslie says:

Hi, I’m in tha same situation. I’m 19 n I can’t get a job. I have applied everywhere like a crazy for 4 months now and nothing. I’m a graphic design student and I’m afraid that when I graduate I’m not going to be able to get in any related to my major because of not working experience at all. I already feel like im a failure :l

  32. Javin says:

I agree, and i think there are many struggling teenagers and adults who deal with the same frustration. my child and his friends can’t get a job anywhere. although there doing good in school for the most part, have a great attitude and are very respectful to everyone that are there possible employee’s and notice the way that many of the staff at most of the places they apply at act, irresponsible, and poor-work ethich and realize how mnay take this oppertunity for granted in a recession, still can’t land a job, due to little or no work expiereence in a comp. against many adults for the same job.

  33. leslie says:

I got an internship few days ago. It’s unpaid but i’m finally happy im getting some experience. I don’t know why many people recommend craigslist. That page didn’t work for me I never got an interview from there and craigs is risky cuz they dont post that much info. I truly recommend barefootstudent.com thanks to that page i got an internship. It’s really a good page for part-time jobs and interns. Good luck!
