N$14 million was set aside by Namibia’s Nampower. The huge amount of money was used to acquire 800,000 units of compact fluorescent lights (CFL). These were then given free of charge to all citizens so as to lessen the high amount of power shortages that the country has been experiencing.
Compared to an ordinary light bulb, the incandescent lamp, the CFL does not use much energy so it can help the country save on the needed energy. There is no need to change fuses or slots for it can fit as if it were an ordinary bulb.
The head of Nampower, Paulinus Shilamba, shares that with such a project, they are estimating that the amount of power used would be decreased. He even shares, “These bulbs will reduce energy by about 20 MW of power currently used. We need to reduce consumption especially starting June till August (the winter period) when most people use more electricity.”
