Natasha Richardson: Talk and Die Syndrome

Actress Natasha Richardson had a ski accident yesterday, and appeared to be fine at first. She was talking fine, and even walked away with (seemingly) minor injuries. But a few hours later, she started complaining of a headache. It is feared she may have “Talk and Die Syndrome.”

Talk and Die Syndrome occurs when a patient seems to withstand a blow to the head and even talks and walks as if they are fine. Hours, or sometimes even days later, they might complain of an extreme headache, which could mean that there is an “ongoing hemorrhage or bleeding around the brain.” This type of injury can take up space in and around the brain and actually decrease oxygen to that area.
Bottom line if you have any type of head trauma, you should watch for signs like “headaches, weakness or balance problems” and seek medical attention immediately.

Someone I know was assaulted at a bar. He was alright for several days, but then started complaining about a headache. He went to several doctors but they all told him he was fine and wouldn’t take him seriously. About a week after the assault his girlfriend found him dead in his bed. He was only about 20.
I had a slip and fall in the bathroom a few weeks ago and hit my temple on teh side of the tub, had severe bruising / some bleeding and impared opening of my Jaw, still feels bruised and was scared about this for ages.
Thanks for this article, I just stopped the Medical Operations Leader as she walked past my door for a quick assessment. I would have been too shy to ask about it.
This is scary stuff
Maija: That is terrible. I am so sorry to hear about your friend. And so young.
Dan: I hope you are okay! I’m glad you asked someone about it – please take care.
