National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Has Begun

I’m so excited. I feel like this is the start of a pink ribbon parade. (Hey, we need one of those, don’t we?) It sure is the start of something special though, isn’t it?

I thought I’d kick things off here with a little background on National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM):

NBCAM began in October of 1985 as a week-long event to fill the information void in public communication about breast cancer.

NBCAM has always been dedicated to increasing awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection.

Since the inception of NBCAM, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.

Today, the NBCAM organization is comprised of several national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working in partnership to build breast cancer awareness, share information and provide access to screening services.

October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, however, at NBCAM, breast cancer awareness and education is a year-round mission.

At the Pink Ribbon Review, raising awareness of “all things breast cancer” is also a year-round mission. This blog is dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness.

During October, however, in honor of NBCAM, it’s ON around here. Everything is kicked up a notch. There are going to be giveaways, book and product reviews, Q&As, expert posts, survivor stories, video clips, event listings … what else do you want to see here … if you have a wish, just let me know.
