January 25 is National Irish Coffee Day. Several parties claim to have invented this festive drink. The chef at Foyne’s, near Shannon in County Limerick Ireland, is said to have invented the concoction in the 1940s. Also laying claim is the Buena Vista Bar and Restaurant near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco and the Tom Bergin Tavern in Los Angeles. Whoever invented the drink, it’s a welcome addition to any cold, winter’s night.
Irish Coffee
1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey, such as Jameson’s
1 tsp brown sugar
6 oz Hot coffee
Heavy cream, whipped
Green creme de menthe
Combine whiskey, sugar and coffee in a mug and stir to dissolve. Float cold cream gently on top. Do not mix. Gently drizzle the creme de menthe on top of the cream in a shamrock pattern, if desired.

I love this holiday because I love Irish Coffee with lots of cream! I also add a bit of coconut cream to mine but then I guess that’s not an Irish coffee anymore is it?? Either way… this is one holiday that I’m all for celebrating. Love your site, Pam
