National Organic Doughnut Day?

June 5, 2009 by Jennifer Chait

So today is officially National Doughnut Day and to celebrate two major doughnut chains are giving away free doughnuts all day long. But that’s not the point of this post. Basically, I think green-minded people miss out on a lot of these kooky national holidays. I mean places like Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme with their meca of disposable cups and non-natural treats are hardly eco-hang-outs. NOT that I don’t like a doughnut now and then, but…

If you’re considering a free doughnut today take along your personal reusable coffee mug for one, and for two, I was thinking, how come there aren’t more eco-natural-organic treat-like shops around? Can you get a greener doughnut?

Yes you can BUT barely. I found a few organic doughnut shops in a smattering of areas around the country with a basic Google search (see two that look cool below). Note that you shouldn’t order doughnuts online for national shipping though – it’s not really fresh (doughnuts have a short life expectancy). Following is a sampling. Check out the sites and see why organic doughnuts put traditional doughnuts to shame…

Seattle – Mighty O Donuts: Organic, locally made, in small batches, non-chemical, coloring-free, preservative-free, trans fat-free donuts and organic coffee.

Deliver to San Francisco, Marin County, and San Bruno – Dee’s Mini Organic Doughnuts: Adorable little organic doughnuts sold by this chain in the Bay Area. Dee’s Crazy Eight Sampler (shown above) features 8 flavors; Dagoba Chocolate Orange, Raging Raspberry, Maple Crunch, To Chai For, Dagoba Chocolate with organic sprinkles, Meyer Lemon, Toasty Coconut, and Cinnamon Sugar and could not be more cute.

SHOP LOCALLY:

If your area is not listed above visit your local co-op, natural food store, organic coffee shop, small local organic bakery, to locate organic doughnuts. Just because they’re not advertised online, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

MAKE YOUR OWN:

For a fresher adventure, why not make your own homemade organic doughnuts? Note that if not all ingredients in a recipe are organic you can switch out organic for conventional.

  1. I was shocked for a minute that you were writing about donuts! I’m sort of glad there aren’t any green options around me. I don’t need the fat or sugar. Eek.

  2. Jennifer says:

Hahahaha. Well, you could try some of the baked ones – maybe add some fruit to make them healthier.
