February 26 is National Pistachio Day. How much do you know about Pistachios? Did you know that:

  • Pistachios grow on trees, each one producing an average of 50,000 nuts every two years.
  • Pistachios have existed for 80 million years.
  • Each nut weights around 1 gram.
  • Iran is the world’s leading grower of pistachios.
  • Most pistachios sold in the United States come from California, whose pistachio industry began in 1976.
  • Pistachios turn golden yellow or red when ripe and pop open by themselves.

Pistachios, especially red ones are a Chinese New Year staple – they’re the nuts that are “smiling”.
