Nature Journals for Kids

January 28, 2008 by Heather Goldsmith

Today I read an article encouraging parents & teachers to help kids keep a nature journal. There are some excellent ideas in the article, with drawing and observation the most important. I liked the idea of keeping a photographic record of their observations. Kids are keen to use technology. You may as well go with that and still get them learning about their environment while they’re taking down relevant details. Check out my entry on Keeping a Nature Journal for more ideas, but please share any in the comments section if you like.

  1. Nature journaling is VERY fun for kids. I started homeschooling my 8-year old last year and she started a nature journal and loved it. I’ve been thinking about buying her a simple digital camera w/ printer dock so she can take photos to go in it, too. She likes to draw pictures of what she sees and write about it. :)

  2. Hi Hope,
I’m so pleased to hear this is something you’re already doing. I hope your 8 year old loves the camera. Thanks for commenting. ;-)
