New Eating Disorder?

Body Image DistortionA researcher in Iowa is studying an often-missed eating disorder similar to bulimia called purging disorder.

Sufferers often purge, or make themselves sick, after eating small to normal amounts of food. That’s different from bulimia in that bulimics usual binge on hundreds to thousands of calories before purging. The sufferers are also of normal weight.

The scary thing about these disorders (purging disorder has yet to be officially recognized, but that may change) is that although a person might look “normal” they could have signficant damage to their bodies. Risks include electrolyte imbalances which can lead to heart problems, tearing of the esophagus, tooth decay, and dehydration.

It’s important to get help if you think you may have a problem. Seeing your doctor can help diagnose or rule out complications from the disorder. The sooner the better, of course!

There’s a great new b5 blog I just recently discovered on the subject of eating disorders called Breaking The Mirror. You can read more about eating disorders from the perspective of a former sufferer. Be sure to check it out!
