New medication for opioid-induced constipation

April 26, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

If you’re living with chronic pain and have to take heavy duty pain medications to be able to function, the last thing you should have to worry about is constipation. Unfortunately though, the opioid, or narcotic, class of drugs is famous for causing constipation.

According to the article FDA Approves Relistor For Opioid-Induced Constipation, Relistor acts by blocking the relaxing action of the opioids on the smooth muscle in the intestines, which is what causes the constipation.

Hopefully it will help those who need it.

  1. tahia says:

i use a few of narcotics and i suffer from constipation any help plz

  2. Hi Tahia – I’m afraid that I can’t offer any advice other than the typical constipation-type suggestions, such as diet, exercise, etc. The best thing would be to speak to your doctor about this. Good luck.

  3. This is a tough deal for those who need to take opioid narcotics for pain relief. In order to combat the constipation, they now have to take another medication on top of it.
