New Years Resolutions

Well, I have been thinking about some New Years resolutions I wanted to set for 2007. I am tired of the same old “lose weight” resolution as I set that one last year and the year before. I have checked this one off the resolution list and added it to my lifestyle list. I don’t smoke so quitting smoking isn’t one I need to set. I thought about it a little bit and realized I should come up with one good New Years resolution, and that is basically to become a better dad to my children. Where that is such a broad topic I have decided to break it down into several smaller goals. If I can stick to these smaller goals I should be able to be a better dad.

1) Read to my kids more often. Currently I read once per day to them. Sometimes it is only for 10 minutes. I want to spend at least 30 minutes each day.

2) Spend more time playing with my kids. I do a lot of supervising and moderating play time. I should sit down on the floor with my kids more often and participate. Showing them how to play and share will make me a better dad.

3) Listen to my kids more. I tend to get tired and frustrated sometimes and with that comes distraction. There are moments where I block out my kids. I want to learn to listen to them more.

4) Schedule more activities. I want to take my kids out more and do more things.

5) Involve my kids. Whether it be housework, cooking, or hobbies I want to include my kids more in what I do. By doing this I will become a better teacher and show my kids I care about them in everything I do.

Do you have anything to add that could make us all better dads? What are your New Years resolutions?

I’m working on the pretend play. Our daughter is getting very into that and I’m having trouble transitioning. I’m also working on getting them outside more often. I mean trips to the playground, walks around the neighborhood, soccer in the backyard type of stuff. I already do plenty of taking the kids to the store type activities. More fresh air is on my 2007 agenda.

Fresh air. Good one mike. Getting out in the fresh air is definitely something I need to do more of myself.
