Recently I experienced an enjoyable day as I substitute taught sixth grade language arts/reading classes.  The students were reading Karen Hesse’s  The Music of Dolphins.

The schedule included watching a taped interview with Karen Hesse.  The author in me found this exciting, learning how and why she writes and catching a glimpse of the area around her Brattleboro, VT home.

I hope that by discussing the video with the students I instilled some of this excitement in them and that they gained insight into this Newbery Medal recipient and her books.  She discussed at length how she came to write Out of the Dust and The Music of Dolphins.

Other books by Karen Hesse:

Out of the Dust (her  1998 Newbery Medal book)

Letters from Rifka

Brooklyn Bridge
