Nothing Could, In Fact, Be Further From The Truth

As often as he may be diminished by folks who have to mention that he had an ego the size of Texas, and possibly couldn’t keep his pants zipped (whatever the he** that means – I swear, I heard an idiot ill person make mention of this in a meeting this past weekend), I am often reminded that Bill had developed a humility that worked. Worked well.
Since he “displayed” it in many places I can feel identity with, I’d like to speak of one – right before the International Convention in 1960 at Long Beach, California. March of 1960… while reminiscing.
From “The Language Of The Heart” pgs. 296-297;
“When I think of our small and quiet unnoticed beginnings of only twenty-five years ago; when I recollect the early struggles, uncertainties, and perils of our pioneering time, I now find it both incredible and infinitely moving to realize that all of this will be climaxed July next when Lois and I will be seeing so many thousands of you face to face at our International Convention in Long Beach, Ca. From now until then, we shall surely be exclaiming to each other, ‘Indeed, what hath God wrought?’ This meaningful exclamation will be our constant reminder that AA is truly God’s creation. No single one of us, nor any single group of us alcoholics got together to invent Alcoholics Anonymous. Contemplating the totality of all that has happened in these twenty-five years we see that He has worked through the willing hearts and minds and hands of thousands. For this reason Dr. Bob and I have often deplored being called co-founders because such titles may create the impression that we pretty much invented, structured, and spread AA all by ourselves.
Nothing could, in fact, be further from the truth.”
Thanks Bill…

If, in fact, people are going to bewail the opinion that bill had an ego the size of Texas, it may do them well to remember that that Texas sized ego was exactly the one God decided to use to start A.A.. Our ego’s, like our other character defects, are God given. sometimes our overbearing desire’s swell our ego’s or other character defects to outlandish proportions. yet still lets not forget how important some of these may be for us, on a smaller scale.
