NOW Says It’s Enough Already

gang-rape-offensive.jpgTake a leisurely click right over to NOW’s Love Your Body expose on current advertising that’s more than a little offensive to women.

Here’s the thing: If all of our messages are about the casual consumption of half the population, and that’s the same half of the population who is doing the mothering, nurturing and teaching of future generations - well can you maybe see a global problem there?

I’m signing that NOW Petition. I, for one, am sick of this.

We KNOW that the images of women you place in magazines and on TV are offensive, harmful, dangerous and disrespectful. These ads are an attack on women and girls. These ads are an affront to my intellegence.  These ads are an assault on women’s equality, reads NOW’s petition.

Where is the equality if we are constantly portrayed as sex toys to be consumed at leisure?

Where did I read that permanent sexual availability is not to be confused with a feminist concept? I think it was on AboutFace.org.

SO offensive. Companies don’t even seem to bother to couch their sexist messages in double entendres anymore – they just put them right out there.

NOW has a nice little gallery of positive ads on their site also. I love the Girl Scout one that has a young girl holding a sign that says I am your future president, and has the tag line “Defy Self-Doubt.”

  2. Tracee says:

The girls scout was my favorite too! I wrote a separate post about the positive ads – they deserve separate attention.
