Offbeat Worth Revisiting: The Mushroom House

Back in the old-school Offbeat days Kevin Humphrey covered the The Mushroom House. However, for those of you who don’t spend your days combing the archives this home is worth a look.

I personally love the Mushroom House. Located in Whistler, Canada it was started way back in the 70s. Not only is the Mushroom House crazy offbeat but the whole home is centered around what the interior of a tree might look like. Zube, the artist behind this masterpiece did an exceptional job. Looking in you really feel like you’re living inside a tree.

It’s fairytale like qualities remind me of the Woodland Home for Elves and Gnomes.

Exterior (mushroom-like; hence the name):

This door leading to the balcony is amazing. Stained glass and cedar wood. According to the Mushroom House site, light plays off the stained glass onto the rocks, water, and the sky above when sunbeams spill in.

Check out the design of the kitchen cabinets:

My dream bedroom, with an incredible view, swirling green walls, and outstanding window shapes… so soothing.

The entire home is unbelievable. You can take a great tour at the Mushroom House website and see all the little touches that make this home exceptional.

  1. Very cool, Jennifer. Did you see that About.com is looking for a green guide? You must apply! You’d be so awesome at that job!

Susan you are too nice! I did know about the About position (2 other people emailed me about it) but I have another opportunity maybe in the works that I’d like to stay open for. But I considered it — believe me. Thanks for stopping by it’s always good to see/read you. Plus it reminds me to stop by Brandcurve!

  3. I just saw the Mushroom House on ‘World’s Most Extreme Homes’ on HGTV. They said it’s for sale for $4 million. Gorgeous craftsmanship!

    Hi,

I just spent a week (Dec 14th to Dec 21st, 2007) at the Mushroom House, my friends bought it from Zube last April. Great place to stay, and the new owners, Kath & Dave are great. Zube came by to drop off some fresh baked bread from his wife, and I must say that it was very tasty! As far as staying in the Mushroom house, very cool, the steam room is outragous, it would take years to realize all the cool stuff that Zube built into the house. I’m in a very select club that has had the pleasure to stay there, and hopefully I’ll be back there again in the near future.

  5. Chris ~ That is so cool. I would love to stay there. Lucky you; and you got to meet the artist behind the home. Double lucky. Thanks so much for stopping by and for sharing your story.

  7. Nat, I believe this house is currently privately owned, and you can only stay by invitation. :( Sorry.
