OH, NO Danny Boy? The Cry Heard ‘Round the World

Saw this story today. It gave me a chuckle. Shaun Clancy, a bar owner in New York City has become some irritated by the song “Danny Boy” that he has banned it from his bar during the month of March. It comes down to this:
Widely decried among well-traveled publicans, the song has become to many the “Sweet Caroline” of Irish ballads — a once epic weeper that’s been bastardized by overuse into a gin-soaked, sing-along parody of itself.
“Everybody thinks — whatever race, creed or color — that after three pints of Guinness, you’re entitled to get up there and butcher the song.”
“The Irish are not known for being a depressed group of people,” Clancy said. “For the song associated with them to be ‘Danny Boy’ — that’s kind of akin to the Yankees winning the World Series and the fans breaking out into ‘Ave Maria.”’ -Chris Francescani of ABC News
The funny thing is that this story has reached a world-wide audience, where everyone has put in their two-cents. So, have any thoughts?
Hey, it can’t be that bad. Rumor has it that on St. Patrick’s Day, if you enter his pub and sing any Irish song other then “Danny Boy” you get a free pint. Now, that rings of Irish hospitality and a very, Happy St. Patrick’s Day to me!
