There has been quite a number of health scares coming from a variety of products with the “Made in China” label. China has far from an adequate and sufficient method of regulating anything including food.
This has led to quite a few concerns from the athletes. They are not really concerned about getting ill, but of what could end up becoming a much worse problem. The Chinese are notorious for adding unregulated steroids, and growth stimulants to their food. The athletes have valid concerns that they may ingest something that could cause them to test positive for banned substances, therefore ending their dreams of Olympic glory.
Due to the concerns from the athletes the Chinese implemented some controls. From ABC News:
Security provisions include a computerized tracking system that details the life history of each carrot and apple, tracking its path from the farm to the athlete’s plate.
“Through this tracking code, we can see the entire production process of these tomatoes, from where they were grown, who grew them, to what kinds of fertilizers were used on these tomatoes, and any other manufacturing details,” said Ling Yuan, general manager of Beijing Tian Agriculture Development Corp. Ltd.
So, it seems that the athletes will be ok, but you wonder what the fans and the Chinese people are being forced to ingest. Read more about the concerns over the food being served at the Games.
