A research team at Karolinska Institutet and Uppsala University found that supplementation of omega-3 can, in certain cases, help combat the depression and agitation symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
There was no observable difference in therapeutic effect between the patients receiving the omega-3 and the placebo group.
However, when the researchers took into account which of the patients carried the susceptibility gene APOE4 and which did not, an appreciable difference appeared.
Carriers of the gene who had received active treatment responded positively to the omega-3 as regards agitation symptoms, while non-bearers of the gene showed an improvement in depressive symptoms.
However, no therapeutic recommendations can be made out of these results yet, not until larger studies on individuals with more pronounced neuropsychiatric symptoms are conducted.
Findings have been reported in an article recently published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

Great link! I am fascinated by the connection between diet and brain health. It is vital to continue researching how we can keep our brains healthy through both diet and exercise. I really great website with tons of information on the effects of diet and exercise on the brain is the Brian Fitness Channel, bfc.positscience.com It has an entire section devoted to maintaining brain health through our everyday activities and would be a great resource for those looking to find info on those “brain foods”
Why wait until you have Alzheimer’s before eating omega-3 oils? Another point: omega 9 oils are also important (as are omega 6, although most people have plenty of that).
Another point: omega-3 and omega-6 oils are also important to the health of your heart.
These oils are best taken to promote good health rather than waiting until it is too late!
