Omega 9 Oils
I received an email from a reader about Dow AgroSciences’ canola and sunflower Omega-9 Oils. I know there’s a lot of controversy enveloping canola oils, but the FDA has authorized canola oil bottlers to indicate health claims on their labels pertaining to canola oil’s role in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. And according to Dow Agro’s website: Omega-9 Oils are healthier because they have zero trans fat and have the lowest amount of saturated fats among oils”, and is thus an ideal choice particularly for restaurants.

Well, I certainly wish restaurants would shift to using healthier oils, but remember, we, the consumers still bear the final responsibility on what we eat. Just because your french fries and burgers were prepared using zero transfat oil doesn’t make it a healthy meal. Perhaps, a bit healthier than they would have been otherwise, ok, but don’t get fooled into believing you can make it a regular fare.
Personally, I still prefer rice bran oil for home use, though.

We do need to watch our fat intake, but like you were hinting, some fats are vital for our bodies. In fact, the recommended nutrient intake for fats is actual more of our calories coming from fat than from protein. I’m glad to hear of this oil option.
I’m not familiar with the “controversy enveloping canola oils,” but by the looks of the graphic you included, it seems to me they’re much healthier!
OK-that study was done by Dow AgroSciences-what does that tell you-is there “new” oil” genetically modified-must be. Yes, I also like rice bran oil for its health benefits.
Even if restaurants use wholesome, appropriate and natural oil, old and dirty oil are still a problem. This one kind of problem restaurants have: using fresh and new oil(they want profits and the consumer don’t see it!).
