On the Road to Recovery – My Journey

I write all the time about what my recovery is like, and that its achievable for everybody. It is slow going, and is taking several years. And just like I can pinpoint the exact day that I got sick (canadian thanksgiving 1998), I can pinpoint the exact moment that I knew I was going to be able to beat this thing. Now since that day, I have had ups and downs, but never has it been as bad as those first few years.
A few years ago, I went on a trip to Europe with a friend of mine. Italy and Greece, were the countries we visited. To celebrate my birthday, we decided to go on a day trip sailing around Santorini, and on one of the sites where the schooner docked, we were able to hike a volcano (ok its actually a crater) but this is my memory. I had never really done a lot of hiking before….and certainly I hadnt done any since I had gotten sick. The hike was not an easy one for me…but so worth it, when we completed it and I was able to look at the lovely view.
When the hike was finished, and I had taken my seat on the schooner. I was very possibly the happiest I have ever been in my entire life. I had just done something (spontaneously) that I didnt think I would ever be doing ~ and at that point I had been feeling pretty good for a few months. I knew right then sitting there, all sweaty and dirty, that nothing was ever going to prevent me from having a quality life.
No matter what we all have in our life thats causing us to feel horrible, we have to clear all that mud and focus on what is going to make us feel great. So today I am going to start sorting through those photos from that trip, and put them out to remind me of how life can be.
All of us, have memories like that. They may not be hiking in Greece memories, but they are just as important, if not more so.
If you feel like sharing, I know lots of people who would be interested in hearing your stories.
