Open Discussion – Topic: Punishments that Work

December 2, 2006 by gayla

Given that we are only two days away from the season premiere of Super Nanny and since the topic of spanking seems to be one that’s so controversial and one that carries with it a great many arguments – I thought it might be interesting to open a discussion thread here and invite everyones views on punishments and to invite parents to share what exactly has worked for them.

I’ll be honest, I’ve raised kids that can truly entertain themselves with shadow puppets – so even locking them in a room with nothing but bare walls isn’t punishment enough for them.

So many parents seem to be pulling their hair out trying to find ways of getting their kids to mind.

What works, what doesn’t?

My own nanny taught me that consistency in anything works. She never spanked the children but they minded her very well. Her formula? No “chances”, no “warnings”. She explicitly states the rules in preschool-friendly format. Then when the rules are broken the child leaves the dinner table, or whatever, and goes to the corner for three minutes.
My children were so well-behaved and polite that my friends often would seek out my nanny’s advice. Now that I’m home and don’t use a nanny I just do what she did, except take away priviledges. They are older and respond to loss of computer time or phone time.
