Our First Trip to the Orthodontist

BracesHow come I have this feeling that our relationship with the orthodontist is going to be a long and regular one? I guess with three kids I really can’t expect them all to be blessed with straight and beautiful teeth.

My 8 year old had her first orthodontic appointment today. She has an underbite going and some crowding. All I am seeing is dollar signs, but in the long run, she will feel better about herself as a young lady when her teeth are straight and pretty.

The orthodontist was very nice, took the time to explain everything to us and was in no rush at all with her treatment. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t want to see her again for 6 months. He did recommend having 3 of her baby teeth pulled to allow for more room for the adult teeth, but that was it for now. I suspect by this time next year she will have a positioner, but that’s it for now.

How many of you have kids in braces? Any tips for someone just starting the journey?

My kids were referred to the orthodontist in pre-school! They’ve been going since then.

The thing to remember about braces is that it’s not just about having a pretty smile but about eliminating jaw pain, headaches, and uneven wear and tear on the teeth from misalignment.

V - thanks for that insight. Miss M already grinds her teeth terribly and her under bite worries me. We really do need to look at it from the corrective state as well.
