Outgoing VP Dick Cheney in a wheelchair

We know that back pain is one of the most common pains among humans. Just about all of us experience a sore back from one time or another, and some of us have it for longer periods for others, making it a chronic pain issue.

Now, I’m not one to second-guess treatments for various problems, but I am kind of scratching my head over this one. Outgoing vice-president Dick Cheney is now in a wheelchair because he hurt his back doing something that many of us have done: moving boxes.

I don’t know about you all, but when my back hurts, the lower back agony that comes with lifting something the wrong way, the *last* thing I want to be doing is sitting. Sitting is agony, especially in a position that you’re in when you’re in a wheelchair because your legs aren’t up high enough to take the stress off your lower back.

The other thing that made me go "huh?" was, boy, was he waiting for the last minute and didn’t he have any help? I guess the last comment wasn’t fair;  no matter how much help you have, you often want to do some stuff yourself.

A wheelchair? For what is reported a pulled back muscle?

It’s different for everyone. When my husband’s back is hurt, he cannot stand for long periods of time. He cannot sit in his recliner in the den. The only chair that is comfortable is his desk chair at home or at work. Me? When my back hurts, forget standing. Sitting down is the only thing that helps the pain at all. I sleep in my chair, too.

I have to agree with Prof S above, back pain is different for everyone.
When I get lower back pain it hurts more for me to stand up, then it does to sit down. And actually, lying down seems to hurt even more, even though the pressure is off my back. I find reclining in a lazy boy chair works best for me.

  3. I do agree that back pain is different for everyone. I can’t personally sit for long periods of time when my back hurts – my lower back simply starts to scream. Fortunately, i don’t have back pain *too* often.

My dad, however, can hardly move when his back hurts. He’s older, granted, but he’s always been that way. When his back starts giving him trouble, it’s laying out on the couch for him with a heating pad.
