What once may have been thought of as an event from science fiction is now reality. A 38-year-old woman in London, England, who was unable to conceive because of a case of extremely early menopause at age 15, is now pregnant after undergoing an ovary transplant. The procedure was done in the United States by Dr. Sherman Silber, a microsurgeon based at the Infertility Center of St. Louis, Missouri.
The ovary was donated by her twin sister and other than that one medical intervention, everything else happened naturally. In vitro fertilization (IVF) wasn’t used. She began ovulating three months after the transplant and she became pregnant a year after the life-changing procedure.
This is such a promising step forward for many women who will become infertile because of medical conditions or have non-functioning ovaries.
