As part of my blogging and writing about pain for this blog and pregnancy for Womb Within, I get to review books and products that I can recommend (if I like them) and sometimes offer as give aways to my readers.
I have a book here called The Art of Body Maintenance: Winner’s Guide to Pain Relief, by Hal Blatman, MD, with art done by Brad Ekvall, BFA.
It’s a nice book with lots of detail and diagrams. The program also uses a rubber ball to help apply pressure to relieve chronic pain.
The author covers pain relief from fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, headache, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis and sports injury. If you would like the book right away, it’s available through Amazon.com and you can follow this link directly: The Art of Body Maintenance: Winner’s Guide to Pain Relief.
If you would like a chance to win a copy of the book, leave a comment in the comment section below about the pain you have and, if you would like, the things you have done to try to help yourself. By the way, comments like “just send it to me” don’t qualify!
In two weeks, on July 14th, I’ll gather all eligible comments and randomize them, choosing one winner. Please be sure that I can get hold of you to tell if you win. I have some prizes from contests that have been given to a second draw because the first winner didn’t leave a legitimate email address or never responded to my email.
So, tell me why you’d like the book.

kerrisixtynine at gmaildotcom
Thanks for this great giveaway. I have intense wrist pain daily which is upsetting. Also arthritis through my hands and fingers. This would be a wonderful asset.
This information I need
I have upper back/shoulder pain because my shoulders are rolled forward from playing clarinet, and wrist and thumb-to-forefinger pain for the same reason. Relatedly, I get frequent knee and ankle pain because of the rapid pivoting and irregular walking I experience as a member of marching band in high school for 6 or so years. In order to deal with these pains I bought a book that explains the causes of certain types of pain and how they can be relieved with stretches. So, I do these stretches and exercise, but I need more help. I am only 20 and I think it is a very bad sign that I am already experiencing this kind of pain; I’d like to fix the problems I have and then take preventative measures so I can be pain-free for the majority of my life.
I’m full of aches and pains. Actually visits to the doctors cost way too much and yes, I do have Medicare but it still is a bit too high for my pocketbook.
I broke my hip when I was 18 (4 years ago) and have seen had chronic hip pain and follow-up surgeries to deal with avascular necrosis of the femoral head. I’ve done physical therapy as well as sports therapy but it still isn’t the same as it was before. I’m ready to try something new.
Chronic neck pain, accupressure and yoga.
The book is not for me — it is for my true love. He suffers from Trigymanal Neuralgia — which I am sure I have misspelled. It causes headache like symptoms which generally last 45 minutes and can be spaced weeks apart…or several times in a day. It is referred to as “the suicide disease” because so many of its victims find a way out. I have run for aspirin (helps a little), held hands, darkened rooms and just wished wished wished that my man did not suffer so. Can you help me help him? His birthday is in July, my friend…
For ten years, my pain comes from having LUPUS along with fibromyalgia, anti-phospholipid syndrome, thyroid problems, and chronic fatigue syndrome.I have used every medication know to man. I’m usually confined to bed after getting out for a couple of hours. Right now I’m getting two injections a day of a morphine based medication. I also used Duragesic pain patches. I would love alternatives since my poor body is so jacked up on heavy meds. Need different doctor too but barely seeing the one I have. No job.
My wife has back pain and has tried everything…….inversion tables, stretching, exercises. Maybe this could help her.
have fibro and osteoarthritis, can really use this book
I have fibromyalgia and suffer from migraines. Before I take prescription meds, I try a warm bath or shower and/or heat packs. Sometimes it works but usually not.
pain in the neck
My left knee was crushed in a car accident over 10 years ago, but it still hurts and I can surely tell you when the rain is coming! I’ve had cortizone (sp?) shots, Ibuprofren is a part of my daily routine, and I’ve also tried numerous knee braces. Nothing seems to help. Good thing I’m not getting any younger! I’d love to have this book! Thanks for the opportunity!
I get frequent headaches and all I do is take Excedrin.
I have herniated disks and arthritus and go to an accupunturist regularly
illial tibula band will not heal, i have tried resting it, stretching like no tommorrow, nothing helps.
I have been suffering with migraines for over 15 years now. I have about 4 to 5 days out of the month with no headache—that’s about 25 days a month with a headache. They consume my life. You name it, I have tried it—OTC, neurologists, alternative meds, supplements, exercise, diet restriction, stress reduction, yoga. I have found a new doctor who specializes in headaches. I have high hopes for him. My b-day is next week so this would be a nice b-day gift. Thanks for the consideration. Any hope is worth it. I feel that is all I have left—hope for a better tomorrow. I’ll pray for all of those posting to this list.
As a sufferer of fibro and arthritis, I could definitely use new techniques for pain relief.
My pain started in 1994. Dx’d with FMS,CFS, and MPS, I was put on a number of medications, many of the same things I’m sure others have been put on. Let’s see, there was Prozac, Vicoden, Xanax, Ambien…quite a combination for someone working in a Dr.s office and supposed to remain in the upright position…By 1996 I was on Social Security Disability and have been there ever since. My next addition to my pain came several years ago when I fell asleep doing a yoga practice. The one often used in meditation called the “lotus position”..simply, the cross legged position. I often sat in that position because it kept the muscles in my legs stretched. Believe me, it’s not the position you should be in when falling asleep. Because I did it incorrectly and for such a long period, several hrs, I crushed the nerves in my feet, and was unable to walk without assistance. I was fortunate in the fact that my right foot is much less affected than my left. A new surgeon in town said he could fix it, he didn’t. He lied. I was devastated. He covered his behind by saying he could give me a 95% chance that my neuropathy could be repaired. Also he said that he had never failed in a neuropathic surgery before. Of course I believed him, he was a Dr.!!! He came to our town and everyone thought he was going to cure everyones neuropathic pain. What we did find out after many hundreds of thousands of dollars is that he lied. He also was a drug addict. I thought I was one of the few that his surgery failed on. Come to find out after his Dr.s office was shut down, and owned by our local hospital, he had come here from a different state where he had also had his liciense revoked. This kind of stuff only happened to other people! I’ve still got all the pain I started with and added to. I also took a fall in Oct of last yr and was in a coma….fortunately, it wasn’t long, and the bolts and screws fit back into place nicely.:-)
Several weeks ago I fell again, trying to turn off the tv in our bedroom. I was half awake, I leaned on my left bad foot, it gave way. I found myself taking an unauthorized landing into the corner of my dresser. It’s been 3 1/2 wks, and the bruise is still not gone. I’ve told you about some of my pain, and the medications I took. The thing that truly has helped my pain is Leslie Sansone’s Walking Tapes. I can walk on our streets because it’s too hard on my legs. Leslie’s tapes have given me a variety of 1,2,3 miles of walking, and the encouragement not to give up. We all need a cheering crowd, and she just happened to be mine…along with her other walkers. No one can understand how I can possibly walk 3 miles on a foot that is difficult to walk on outside..I can’t explain it. It’s something like meditating, I fix my focus on getting through the next step, the next mile, the next mile, and before I know it the 3 miles is over. After boring you all to tears here is a laundry list of things I’ve tried.
FMS;sleeping meds; (Ambien)caused me to walk in the middle of the night..to the frig…I went from 140 to 225 lbs within a yr. Depression was huge..I hated being over weight…I hated myself for not being able to get it off. Once again, Leslie Sansone was the biggest help in walking in home. Xanax several times a day, methadone, duregesic patches. The best thing was going off of the Ambien and the Xanax. It was making me goofy but I felt like I was better “equipped” to get through life, not so. Back to what I’ve tried.
Medications;
Yoga;
Meditation;
Guifennesin;back in late 90’s; it was going to cure everyones pain and fatigue fms.
Massage;chiropractic; physical therapy; Marriage and Family Counseling (I knew whatever was tearing my body down had to be my fault)
Supplements; low carb diets; low calorie diets;
Vitamin D..more fruits and veggies…in other words, try and have a healthier diet. (This is so important..I can’t stress it enough) The BIG problem is that all of these thing CAN help in moderation. My brother was kind enough to give me a couple biofeedback machines from his practice. I thought they worked for awhile, but in the end, I had to start thinking better and utilizing in moderation the things I knew that would work. It was a full time job trying to get all of these straight. The good news is I’m feeling better and I haven’t mentioned whatever it is that is going to be the “fix” for our pain, I’m glad to learn about it. For 14 yrs I’ve tried helping people with FMS,CFS…I started the first FMS support group in our community. Since then someone else has taken it over, and has since disbanned. It will start again one day.
I appreciate all of you hanging in there and reading my boring story…oh, that’s one more thing….WRITING..WRITING..AND WRITING SOME MORE! Journaling about your pain, your feelings, anger, resentments…anything that is going through your head.
Laughing…you’ve got to laugh..get comedies to watch….more laughing the better. Releases endorphins, a natural pain killer..also why aerobics work.
You’ve got to take care of yourself if you want to help others.
I thank God everyday for an understanding husband.
Thanks for reading this…if you didn’t fall asleep trying.
have degernerative joint disease and have had for the last 30 years – my md has introduced me to prolotherapy – injections of dextrose – sounds strange I know – but read up on it and you will be surprised it goes way back!!
I could really use pain relief for my poor old knees
Bio Freeze works pretty good
Lower back pain!
I have osteoarthritis and have a physical job. Needless to say, there is some regular pain. I have found keeping dairy products to a minimum helps. Go figure.
My wife has RA, and controlling her pain is a bear…we could really use this.
I suffer from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy also known as Chronic Regional pain Syndrome which causes a severe burning pain 24-7 which is worse if anything touches me or I touch something which means even getting hugs causes severe pain. I have been through nerve blocks have had an epidural and currently have a neurostimulator in place none of which works I would really love to win this book
Fibromyalgia is where my pain comes from. I am also going through peri-menopause- joy!
I try to manage my pain without drugs, but as we all know, some days are better than others. I would love to win this book and pass it on to others that would benefit.
Back and hip pain
In January the muscles in my right shoulder started to tense causing so much pain it was difficult to sleep…often they would seize up during sleep and jar me awake. For two weeks I had a friend try to work the knot out, but to no avail. Two weeks after that (and more knots in my neck) my legs and arms started to have a strange sensation – almost electrical- seemingly like legs falling asleep, but not the same. I went to the MD who performed tests on my thyroid, tested for lyme disease, vitamin deficiencies, etc. All normal. I was then sent to a neurologist who had two MRI’s done (cervical and head) to check for any degenerative diseases. None. The neurologist suggested coming back in 6-8 weeks if symptoms persisted. During this time I began developing minor muscle spasms that occurred randomly…in my left temple, gluteals, legs, feet, biceps, triceps, stomach, lower back, etc. In May I went back to the neurologist who said that I ‘was normal” “everything was ‘fine’” and left it at that. This is when a friend suggested to me to look up trigger points. I’ve been doing as much as I can to work them out but have recently had to begin physical therapy because the doctors and PT’s describe the soft tissue in my back as ‘brutal’ and ask, “You’ve been living with this for 6 months?” Anyway, I just turned 30, getting ready to begin my second year of nursing school, and trying to pinch pennies while still trying to fix my body. The physical therapists are doing all they can to help but it will take quite awhile to relieve all that is occurring in my body. It would be great to have a book like this so that I can continue to learn and do what I can to aid what the therapists are doing as well as get better before I begin school again next month. Thanks so much for your consideration!

I suffer from lower back pain as well as occasional hip and leg. I have tried massage, certain exercises, and the usual ibuprofen. I would like to try more natural pain relievers without the use of drugs.
I suffer from chronic pain due to a medical condition and would love to find something that really works to relieve the pain. I’ve tried prescriptions, exercise and meditation and do get some relief but not enough. Thanks for the pains free giveaway.
Lower back pain–I’ve tried rest, meditation, and seeing a chiropractor. Still hurts.
I pulled my groin muscle a few years back and it acts up all the time. Thanks for the contest!

I’d love a reference guide like this. I have a lot of back pain and have been trying stretches to relieve it.
I have carpal tunnel syndrome and using a wrist brace at night and doing strengthening exercises has gradually helped to relieve the pain over about a year and a half. I still have to be very, very careful.
I am getting older and have lots of aches and pains. I am always looking for natural ways to relieve pain.
I frequently have sinus headaches. I think my head is a barometer! Every time the weather changes, I get a headache. I use a netty pot and take 3 advils. I also drink a caffeinated drink, eat chocolate and apply cold packs. These help, but have not proved to be a “cure” for me. Thanks!
My husband has had pain in his joints for years and he’s tried everything, but nothing seems to work!
This is great. I would love to relieve pain and use less medicine.
I have Fibromyalgia and back problems. I went through physical therapy and it helped so much. I do my exercises everyday and it does so much to help the pain
I am having chronic knee pain and not sure what to do with it.
My buddy Arthur Itis decides to pay a visit from time to time, making his presence well known. I do hand stretching exercises to keep my hand joints limber and general stretching exercises to keep Arthur at bay from the rest of my body. I find that regular stretching and taking an occasional Advil seems to kick Arthur in the butt every time! A pain management book would be helpful for me so that I can keep active and enjoy my life despite Arthur’s occasional “visits”.
