Being postmenopausal doesn’t mean no longer being sexual; many older women can attest to that. However the drop in estrogen levels can make sexual intercourse quite painful for some women. The official medical name for this is dyspareunia.
Researchers at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, have been investigating treatments for painful sex because this can truly impact on a woman’s life. Many women are provided with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by their doctors to help alleviate the pain, but for many this doesn’t work. And, if it doesn’t work, the researchers found that they aren’t offered much else to help them.
