Palliative care: “Every human being should be entitled to relief from pain”

“Every human being should be entitled to relief from pain”

That line is part of a speech given by Outgoing President Troels S. Jensen of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) when he spoke at the 12th World Congress on Pain in Glasgow, Scotland at the beginning of the week. He called for palliative pain relief to be made a human right.

This isn’t a new issue – it’s one that the palliative care movement has been fighting for and working on for a long time now: AIDS, Cancer, and Palliative Care in Africa and 7% of World Population Suffering Unnecessary Cancer Pain.

It seems like such a simple thing: “Every human being should be entitled to relief from pain,” and yet so many people around the world are suffering needlessly.  You can read more about Dr. Jensen’s speech: World’s Biggest Event On Pain Calls For Palliative Care To Be Made A Human Right.

What can we do to help raise this awareness? Is there something we can do? Or are we powerless?
