Joan Grubin’s paper installations are breath-taking. As an added dimension, the backs of the papers are brightly colored so that they reflect off the walls of the installation, giving another dimension and depth to what is already an amazing display.

EXHALATION is a large wall installation in which a pattern of concave diamonds appears to well up out of the void of the white wall. The diamonds are articulated with thin strips of painted paper attached to the wall. Fluorescent paint on the backs of the strips reflects color onto the wall behind, giving the 3D diamonds an implied volume. At the outer limits of the pattern, the diamonds become two dimensional, until finally they are drawn on the wall with pencil.
