Parental leave in Sweden

November 8, 2007 by Bill

I just returned from a trip to Sweden (after 18 hours of flights and driving) and while there I had a few conversations with new parents regarding parental leave. In Sweden parents are entitled to a total of 18 months, yes 18 MONTHS, of work to be shared between the mother and father.

Of the 18 months, it required that an each individual parent must use at least 3, as to encourage involvement by both parents. The cost of this extended time off is split between the employer and the state.
Wikipedia has more info on parental leave policies in other parts of the world.
