Parents Don’t Cause Autism

February 17, 2008 by Kristina Chew, PhD

Do I even need to say that?—-after all, it’s no longer the days of the refrigerator mother theory of autism popularized by self-styled early child development expert Bruno Bettelhaim. But then one encounters this headline:

Autism Caused by Uninformed Parents

in the National Expositor, which is not directly blaming bad parents for causing autism. It’s blaming parents for taking one particular bad action that “causes” a child to become autistic—for having them vaccinated—specifically for having them “injected” with a mercury-based substance in vaccines.

…[Methyl] mercury is injected directly into the bodies of children where it causes severe neurological damage. And yes, it does cause Autism, despite what you’ve read in the dumbed-down press. Only a fool would inject their child with mercury-preserved vaccines.

Rather: Only one with quite foolish thinking would believe that parents—whatever they do, whoever they are—cause a child to become autistic.

    Methyl mercury.
    Wrong, wrong, wrong.
Well, these folks at the National Expositor should know “dumbed down” since they present a splendid example.

As my mother used to say, “Consider the source.”

    “the truth movement”

    – 9/11 conspiracy theories
    – mercury militias

National Expositer? Is this some sort of competitor to The Onion?

  4. Emily says:

Mother of Mary. Methyl mercury? Wow.

  5. Not the 9/11 conspiracy theoriests!—-ran into them once as we were existing the PATH station at the World Trade Center. They were yelling something like “Know the truth” over and over, rhythmically, with a drum too—–and Charlie started to say that very phrase, over and over (I suggested he say something else).

    “Parents Don’t Cause Autism”?

Actually if you examine all the published data by the autism scientific establishment, they are in fact saying that parents do cause autism. The polygenic theorists who claim autism is a neurogenetic disorder base these assumptions, not on the fact that no ‘autism’ gene has ever been identified but artificial constructs that claim that autism is a spectrum disorder and the parents are themselves autistic but not handicapped.

The shift in theoretical beliefs has gone from refrigerator mothers who have inflicted psychological damage on their children to the concept that ‘refrigerator’ parents (the broad autism phenotype) just happened to have defrosted long enough to have produced a genetically defective child.

  7. That’s what I have been thinking as more and more evidence points to a genetic basic for autism (for a genetically different child).

  8. RAJ says:

“That’s what I have been thinking as more and more evidence points to a genetic basic for autism (for a genetically different child)”.

Where is the evidence that there is a genetic basis for what is labelled ‘autism’?.

The ‘autism’ genes reported by the Autism Genome Consortium are all found in mental retardation syndromes without ‘autism’. The phenotype for all these false positives is mental retardation, not ‘autism’.

There is no more scientific evidence for autism being a genetically transmitted condition than there is for the vaccine theory of autism.

I adhere to Einstein’s admonition that there must be a passionate resistance to the dogma of the establishment and too many parents prostrate themselves before the Grand Poobah’s of the entrenched autism research establishment.

Someone please explain to me any genetic finding reported by the research community that is specific to autism.

  9. When you attack the messenger over the message, you have shown your true colors. Cointelpro, Don’t know what it means? go look it up. I challenge any one of you to find out the facts from a Biochemist. Ask them what the effects of mercury on brain cells are? look it up for yourself, don’t take our word for it. We simply give facts on our website. if you can refute facts, please do so but attacking the messenger is a straw man arguement.
