Patients Like Me

We talked about How to be a Good Patient a few days ago and now I’ve run across a site that is all about patients helping patients.

Patients Like Me is a kind of social network made for people with life changing conditions:

PatientsLikeMe is a privately funded company dedicated to making a difference in the lives of patients diagnosed with life-changing diseases. Our personal experiences with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) inspired us to create a community of patients, doctors, and organizations that inspires, informs, and empowers individuals. We’re committed to providing patients with access to the tools, information, and experiences that they need to take control of their disease.

There are discussions of treatment, research, symptoms and more for conditions such as HIV, ALS (Lou Gehrig disease), mood disorders, and Parkinson’s Disease.

They were featured in the New York Times.

The site is more than just information and advice. These patients are active participants in their care, generating data about their symptoms, medications and treatments to create a patient experience database.

Even if you don’t have these conditions in your life, there’s some interesting stuff over there.

i would like to urge caution in getting involved with that forum. i entered looking for some understanding and answers to why i might be experiencing certain emotional symptoms and was told i was crazy and needed to go to the er pronto. it seems that if you dont follow their advice that you are unwelcome there. It reeks of a cult like mentality so i urge caution to anyone seeking support there.
